POLITICAL INFLUENCE ON THE CURRICULUM: HOW EDUCATION IN PAKISTAN REFLECTS NATIONAL IDENTITY AND POLITICAL AGENDA

Education plays a crucial role in shaping national identity, political values, and collective memory within a society. In Pakistan, the curriculum has historically been influenced by political ideologies and state-building objectives. This study examines the political influence on the curriculum in Pakistan and explores how education reflects national identity and political agendas. The paper analyzes the historical development of education policies, the role of curriculum in constructing national identity, and the ways political regimes shape textbook narratives and educational content. Through a review of scholarly literature and policy documents, the study highlights how subjects such as Pakistan Studies, history, and Islamic Studies have been used to promote ideological narratives related to nationalism, religion, and state legitimacy. The research also discusses the impact of politically influenced curricula on students’ political socialization, civic values, and perceptions of history. Furthermore, the study identifies several challenges in curriculum reform, including political pressures, institutional limitations, and the difficulty of balancing national unity with cultural diversity. The findings suggest that while the curriculum has
played an important role in promoting national cohesion, there is a growing need for more inclusive and critical educational approaches. Future curriculum reforms should focus on encouraging critical thinking, promoting diverse perspectives, and supporting democratic citizenship within Pakistan’s education system.
